The Shropshire village of Welshampton lies close to the town of Ellesmere and is part of the area of the county known as ‘North Shropshire Lake District’. The equally small villages of Lyneal and Colemere are located very close to Welshampton, and it is known that racing took place here before 1840. However, the ‘County History of Shropshire’ recorded a one day meeting taking place in October 1840, with a second meeting taking place just 5 years later in 1845.
